# A fire breaks out on the Brooklyn Bridge during the July 4 fireworks

A small fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge during the Macy's Fourth of July fireworks show over the East River, briefly adding an unplanned blaze to the display. Firefighters put it out quickly, and no injuries were reported.

The Fourth of July fireworks over New York produced one burst that was not in the script. A fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night during the Macy's fireworks display over the East River, briefly drawing firefighters to the landmark before it was brought under control.

The Fire Department of New York described it as a rubbish fire and sent two engines to keep the flames from spreading. Crews knocked the fire down quickly, and no injuries were reported. Fire officials suggested the episode, while dramatic against the backdrop of the show, was not entirely surprising. The Macy's show is one of the country's largest Independence Day displays, and this year's edition marked the event's 50th anniversary, staged as the nation celebrated its 250th birthday. For most of the enormous crowd watching from both sides of the river, the fire was a minor and quickly resolved footnote to the night, noticed mainly by those close enough to see the firefighters at work.

No damage to the bridge itself was reported, and traffic and the fireworks continued. City officials did not immediately indicate that the display would change in future years, and the FDNY's account framed the fire as the kind of small, contained risk that the show's safety planning already anticipates.
