A 27-year-old man was shot at Whittier Boulevard and Lorena Street in Boyle Heights at about 2:20 a.m. Monday during a street takeover, [the Los Angeles Times reported](https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2026-07-20/man-shot-during-street-takeover-in-boyle-heights-gunman-still-at-large). The gunman left before police arrived and no arrest has been announced. According to the police account, the shooting followed an attempt by another man to take property from the victim. That detail matters to how the event is understood: this was a robbery at a takeover rather than a stunt gone wrong. The victim's condition has not been released. ## What a takeover is For readers unfamiliar with the term, a street takeover is when drivers block an intersection, usually late at night, so that cars can perform donuts and burnouts inside a ring of spectators. They are organized quickly over social media, and the crowd is the point as much as the driving. Monday morning is an example of that last category. The danger was not the driving. ## Not an isolated weekend Boyle Heights was not the only one. Other shootings at takeovers around Los Angeles County over the same weekend left a 17-year-old wounded in Watts and a man in critical condition, also in Watts, according to local reporting. Three shootings across a weekend at events of this kind is the sort of pattern that tends to produce a political response, and it already has. ## What the city and county are doing The LAPD has a task force dedicated to takeovers and street racing, and the department has reported intercepting more than 90 takeovers so far this year, with dozens of arrests and more than a hundred vehicles impounded. At the county level, supervisors have moved to extend the ordinance so it reaches organizers and social media promoters rather than only drivers and spectators, with fines proposed up to $1,000. Existing county law already makes it an offense to be a spectator at an illegal speed contest. Mayor Karen Bass has described a mix of patrol cars, mounted and foot units and undercover vehicles being deployed against takeovers. Sheriff Robert Luna has called the events dangerous and illegal, and Supervisor Holly Mitchell has said organizers and promoters will be held accountable. ## The honest assessment Enforcement figures are not the same as outcomes, and readers should treat them carefully. Impounding vehicles and arresting spectators tells you what police did, not whether takeovers became less frequent or less dangerous. The county says takeovers in the areas it patrols have fallen substantially over the past two years. The Herald has not been able to verify that figure against a primary source and is not repeating a specific percentage on the strength of secondary reporting.
