# Another spokesperson exits Mayor Bass's office amid heavy communications turnover

Amanda Crumley, Mayor Karen Bass's deputy mayor for communications, is leaving City Hall after about two months on the job, the latest in a run of departures from the mayor's press operation.

Mayor Karen Bass's communications shop is losing another leader. Amanda Crumley, who [joined the administration as deputy mayor for communications in January and is departing after roughly two months in the role](https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2026-07-14/mayor-bass-loses-another-spokesperson-amid-heavy-turnover), told a reporter she was leaving for a better balance in her life.

## What she said

["I decided I want to do something better suited to having a balanced life, which is important to me,"](https://www.aol.com/articles/another-aide-bolts-karen-bass-233340673.html) Crumley said, adding that she remained supportive of the mayor. Her exit is a personnel matter rather than a policy dispute, but its timing adds to a pattern that has drawn notice at City Hall.

## A revolving door in the press office

Crumley's departure is [described as the fifth from the mayor's communications team over roughly the past year](https://www.aol.com/articles/another-aide-bolts-karen-bass-233340673.html). Among the earlier exits were deputy press secretary Gabby Maarse, who left for a role with the LA28 Olympic organizing committee, and Zach Seidl, a longtime aide who had worked with Bass in Congress and City Hall before stepping down as deputy mayor for communications.

Turnover is a fact of life in any mayor's office, and a single busy communications shop can churn for reasons that have nothing to do with the boss. But a concentrated run of departures in the team responsible for the mayor's public message tends to invite questions about workload, direction and morale.

## The backdrop

Bass, who took office in December 2022, has governed through an unusually demanding stretch. The January 2025 wildfires in Pacific Palisades and Altadena forced a long and politically fraught recovery effort, and the city has been wrestling with a large budget shortfall. Those pressures fall heavily on a mayor's communications operation, which must manage the public response to crises, criticism and hard fiscal choices.

The mayor's office did not immediately provide a statement about Crumley's departure or its plans to fill the post. For now, the exit leaves another gap near the top of an operation that has seen more than its share of them.
