# 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' gets a one-week theatrical run after a fan backlash

Paramount will give the new animated feature 'Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender' a one-week theatrical run in Los Angeles and New York, a reversal after the studio had planned to send it straight to streaming, prompting an outcry from fans and the film's own team.

One of animation's most devoted fandoms is getting its wish, if only briefly. "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender," a new animated feature continuing the beloved Nickelodeon saga, will play in theaters after all, [screening July 24 through 30 at a pair of AMC locations in Los Angeles and New York](https://collider.com/avatar-aang-the-last-airbender-limited-theatrical-release-july-24-2026/) before it lands on Paramount+.

## What's showing, and where

This is not a remaster or a highlight reel but a new movie set in the "Avatar" world. According to [reporting on the release](https://collider.com/avatar-aang-the-last-airbender-limited-theatrical-release-july-24-2026/), it will run at AMC Burbank 8 in the Los Angeles area and AMC Empire 25 in Manhattan, with a handful of showtimes a day across the week, ahead of the film's streaming debut. The story reportedly picks up after the events of the original series, with Aang at its center.

## A reversal driven by backlash

Getting to theaters was not the plan. Paramount had [initially intended to release the film straight to Paramount+, skipping cinemas entirely](https://gizmodo.com/turns-out-avatar-aang-the-last-airbender-will-yip-its-way-into-select-theaters-after-all-2000786107), a decision that drew loud objections from fans and, reportedly, from people who worked on the film. After the movie leaked online, the pressure grew, and the studio reversed course.

The change is not purely sentimental. A qualifying theatrical run can make a film eligible for awards consideration, including the Oscars' animated-feature category, giving Paramount a reason beyond goodwill to put the movie on the big screen, even for a week.

## Why "Avatar" still commands this

That a nearly two-decade-old animated property can generate this kind of demand says something about its staying power. The original series, which aired on Nickelodeon in the 2000s, is widely regarded as one of the finest animated shows ever made, praised for its storytelling, character growth and surprisingly weighty themes. It spawned a sequel series, a sprawling universe of comics and games, and, more recently, a live-action adaptation that reignited debate about the franchise even as it introduced it to new viewers.

For the fans who have kept the world of benders alive through all of it, the theatrical run is both a victory and an event: a chance, however short, to watch a new "Avatar" story the way its most ardent audience always wanted, together, in the dark, on the biggest screen available.
