# Bomb at Crowded Damascus Cafe Kills at Least Six, Syrian Authorities Say

A bomb tore through a crowded cafe in central Damascus on Thursday, killing at least six people and wounding more than 20, Syrian authorities said, in the latest attack to test the country's fragile security as its new government works to consolidate control after the fall of Bashar al-Assad. No group immediately claimed responsibility.

An explosion at a cafe in the heart of the Syrian capital has killed at least six people, the latest jolt to a country still trying to find its footing after more than a decade of war and the collapse of its long-ruling government.

## What happened

The blast struck a cafe in central Damascus on Thursday afternoon, near the Palace of Justice, the capital's main courthouse. Syrian state media and the Interior Ministry confirmed the explosion, which local reports described as a planted explosive device. Officials put the toll at [at least six killed and 22 wounded](https://www.al-monitor.com/originals/2026/07/least-6-killed-22-wounded-damascus-cafe-explosion-what-know), figures echoed across outlets including Al Jazeera and Euronews. Some earlier accounts had said at least five. Authorities cautioned that the numbers were preliminary and could change given the severity of some injuries.

Damascus officials said a suspect was pursued and detained while fleeing the scene, though they did not release a name or describe a motive, and the investigation was continuing. No individual has been charged, and no accusation should be treated as established fact.

## No claim of responsibility

No group claimed responsibility in the hours after the attack. Syrian officials blamed unnamed "parties who do not want stability in Syria," language that stopped short of naming anyone. In coverage of the blast, analysts raised possibilities ranging from remnants of the former government's security forces to extremist cells seeking to exploit the country's security gaps, [Al Jazeera reported](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/2/whats-behind-the-deadly-bombing-of-a-crowded-damascus-cafe). None of those possibilities has been confirmed.

## A fragile transition

The bombing is the latest in a string of security incidents in Damascus since Assad was toppled in December 2024. The area around the Palace of Justice carries added weight now, as Syria's transitional authorities have begun trials of former officials over alleged crimes under the old government. Earlier attacks include a June 2025 church bombing that authorities said killed around 25 people.

Since Assad's fall, the country has remained relatively stable under interim leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, officials and analysts say, but the government has acknowledged that restoring full security will take time. Its task is a double one: to account for the abuses of the past while keeping ordinary Syrians safe in the present. Thursday's blast, at an everyday cafe beside a symbol of the country's legal reckoning, was a reminder of how much of that work remains.
