# CHP Fatally Shoots an Armed Suspect at a Covina Gas Station After a Freeway Shooting

California Highway Patrol officers shot and killed a man at a Covina gas station early Thursday, authorities said, ending a pursuit that began when the man allegedly shot a tow-truck driver on the eastbound 210 Freeway. The tow driver was critically hurt; no officers or bystanders were injured, and eastbound lanes were shut down for hours.

A confrontation that started on a freeway shoulder ended in a fatal police shooting at a gas station, snarling one of the San Gabriel Valley's main arteries before dawn on Thursday.

## What authorities say happened

Around 3 a.m., a man called for a tow truck on the eastbound 210 Freeway near Grand Avenue in Glendora, the California Highway Patrol said, [as reported by ABC7](https://abc7.com/post/suspect-shot-chp-covina-gas-station-reported-assault-210-freeway-eastbound-lanes-shut-down/19440948/). An argument broke out between the man and the tow-truck driver, and authorities said the man opened fire, wounding the driver, before fleeing.

CHP officers pursued the vehicle. When it stopped at a gas station at Arrow Highway and Citrus Avenue in Covina, the man got out and produced a firearm, according to the CHP's account. Officers fired, striking him. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

## The injured and the closure

The tow-truck driver was hospitalized with critical injuries. No CHP officers or bystanders were reported hurt. All eastbound lanes of the 210 were shut down as investigators worked the scene, tangling early-morning traffic through the area for hours.

## What comes next

Authorities had not publicly identified the man as of Thursday morning, and the sequence of events is still being pieced together from the CHP's initial account; some details may change as the investigation proceeds. Under California law, any police shooting that kills a civilian is subject to an independent state review, in addition to the CHP's own inquiry. Officials said more information would be released as it is confirmed.
