Police, who had refused permission for the march, met it with batons and tear gas and detained the party's founder. Riot police in New Delhi used batons and tear gas on Monday against demonstrators trying to march from Jantar Mantar to India's parliament, [according to the South China Morning Post](https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/south-asia/article/3361184/indian-police-clash-cockroaches-marching-protest-exam-irregularities) and other accounts from the scene. The march had been formally refused permission. ## Where the name comes from The protesters belong to the Cockroach Janta Party, which is not a registered party so much as an internet movement that took an insult and made it a banner. On May 15, the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, used the word "cockroaches" in open court in remarks about unemployed young people and "parasites" attacking the system. The comment spread immediately. Within a day, a political communications strategist named Abhijeet Dipke had [launched the Cockroach Janta Party online](https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2026/5/20/cockroach-janata-party-top-indian-judges-comment-sparks-satire-protest), its name a direct parody of the governing Bharatiya Janata Party. Kant subsequently said he had been misquoted, and that his criticism was aimed at people who had entered the legal, media and other professions using fake degrees rather than at unemployed young people generally. That clarification has not slowed the movement built on the original remark. ## What they are demanding The grievance underneath the satire is concrete. India's high-stakes entrance examinations, which govern access to medical schools and government employment, have been repeatedly compromised by leaked question papers. Gulf News reported that some 2.2 million medical students had to sit a re-examination after a previous test was scrapped over a leak. For a system where a single exam can determine a career, a leak is not an administrative embarrassment. It is the difference between a place and no place, and the movement's demands reflect that: the resignation of the education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, structural reform of the examination system, and compensation for the families of students who died by suicide in the aftermath. ## Monday The march coincided with the opening of parliament's monsoon session. [France 24 reported](https://www.france24.com/en/asia-pacific/20260719-india-bans-march-on-parliament-by-cockroach-activists-risking-a-standoff) that police had banned it in advance, citing the need to maintain order around parliament, and imposed prohibitory orders and layered steel barricades along the route. Demonstrators gathered at Jantar Mantar, the stretch of central Delhi where protest has been permitted for decades, and moved toward parliament anyway. Police baton-charged them and fired tear gas. Dipke was detained. The number of people injured or detained has not been established. Accounts refer to injuries among both protesters and police without giving figures, and the Herald is not able to confirm a count. Sonam Wangchuk, the educator and environmental campaigner who had joined the sit-in and undertaken a lengthy hunger strike in support of the movement, was moved to a hospital as his health deteriorated. ## The two accounts The police position is procedural: the march was unauthorized, parliament was in session, and officers acted to enforce restrictions that had been announced beforehand. The organizers' position is that the restrictions were the point. A spokesperson told the [Associated Press](https://www.ksat.com/news/world/2026/07/20/indias-cockroach-movement-supporters-gather-to-attempt-a-march-to-parliament/) that the government had approached them for talks that morning, and that the turnout spoke for itself. "We want the government to hear us, not silence us," a 19-year-old student at the march told reporters. Both things can be true at once, which is the usual shape of these confrontations. A refused permit is a lawful basis for dispersal and also a convenient one. ## Why it registers Al Jazeera has [tracked the movement's growth](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/6/16/my-voice-is-being-heard-a-month-of-indias-cockroach-janta-party) since May, and its reach online has been substantial for something two months old and organized around a joke. Whether it becomes a durable political force or dissipates is an open question.
