# Deputies Fatally Shoot Man Who Killed a Kidnapping Victim in a Car Trunk in Chino Hills

A pursuit that began with reports of gunfire on Monteverde Drive ended about a mile away on Wandering Ridge Drive, where the driver opened the trunk and shot the man inside before deputies fired. Both men died at the scene.

Two men are dead after a kidnapping in Chino Hills ended Wednesday night with a
short pursuit and a shooting involving San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies.

Deputies were sent just after 10 p.m. to Monteverde Drive on a report of shots
fired and someone yelling for help,

A man had been shot at the location and put into the trunk of a Nissan Altima
with Oregon license plates.

## The pursuit

Deputies found the car and tried to stop it. The driver did not yield, and a short
chase followed that ended on Wandering Ridge Drive, roughly a mile from where the
call originated.

After the car stopped, the driver got out, walked to the trunk, opened it and shot
the man inside. Deputies then opened fire, killing him. A passenger got out of the
car with hands raised and was taken into custody without incident. No deputies
were hurt.

Both the driver and the kidnapping victim were pronounced dead at the scene. The
driver was 67; the victim was a man in his 60s. Authorities have not released
either name.

## What is not yet known

Sheriff's spokeswoman Gloria Orejel described the sequence in basic terms:
"Apparently there was a victim inside there who had been kidnapped from the
previous Monteverde (Drive) address."

Beyond that, the department says investigators are still working on the central
questions. It has not said whether the men knew each other, and it has not offered
a motive for the original shooting or the kidnapping. The passenger's role is part
of the ongoing investigation.

Deputy-involved shootings in San Bernardino County are reviewed by the sheriff's
homicide detail and the district attorney's office, a process that takes months
and typically produces the first detailed public account of what deputies saw and
when they decided to fire.

## Where things stand

This account comes from the sheriff's department, which is both the agency
investigating the kidnapping and the agency whose deputies fired the fatal shots.
That is standard practice in California, and it is also the reason the initial
narrative in cases like this one is usually revised as physical evidence, body-worn
camera footage and witness accounts are reviewed.
