# Director Carl Rinsch Sentenced to 30 Months in $11 Million Netflix Fraud

A federal judge in Manhattan has sentenced director Carl Rinsch to two and a half years in prison for defrauding Netflix of $11 million meant to finance a science-fiction series he never finished — then spending it on Rolls-Royces, luxury goods and failed cryptocurrency bets.

A Hollywood director's vision for a sci-fi epic ended not on screen but in a Manhattan courtroom.

## A sentence half what prosecutors sought

Carl Erik Rinsch, the Los Angeles-based director of the 2013 film *47 Ronin*, was sentenced this week in Manhattan federal court to 30 months in prison after a jury convicted him of wire fraud and money laundering, [Variety reported](https://variety.com/2026/film/news/carl-rinsch-sentence-30-months-keanu-reeves-netflix-1236798838/). U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff, of the Southern District of New York, imposed the term over prosecutors' request for at least five years, and also ordered three years of supervised release and $11 million in forfeiture. The Justice Department said Rinsch must report to prison later this year.

## A show that never aired

Netflix had committed a large sum — by most accounts more than $40 million — to Rinsch for a science-fiction series variously titled *White Horse* and *Conquest*, [according to prosecutors](https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/los-angeles-director-and-writer-sentenced-prison-11-million-production-fraud). As the project stalled toward non-completion, Rinsch demanded more money, and Netflix wired roughly $11 million to a company he controlled in early 2020. That money, prosecutors said, never reached the production. Instead, [court evidence showed](https://abcnews.com/Entertainment/wireStory/director-carl-rinsch-sentenced-prison-11m-fraud-case-134324235), Rinsch spent it on five Rolls-Royces and a Ferrari, hundreds of thousands of dollars on watches, clothing and furniture, and poured millions into speculative stock options and cryptocurrency that quickly evaporated. Netflix, which never received a finished series, had already won a $12 million arbitration award against him in 2024.

## Mental health cited, but no excuse

Defense lawyers and character witnesses — including actor Keanu Reeves, Rinsch's collaborator on *47 Ronin* — urged leniency, citing mental-health struggles. Reeves submitted a letter describing Rinsch as warm and creative but prone to "self-sabotage" and asking for "leniency and mercy as well as justice." Reeves is not accused of any wrongdoing; his connection is solely the *47 Ronin* friendship, and his letter was offered in support at sentencing. Judge Rakoff accepted that mental-health difficulties "may explain some of the excesses" but drew a line, saying Rinsch "was determined to lie to get substantial monies from Netflix, lie to cover it up." The sentence came with conditions requiring outpatient mental-health treatment.

## A warning to the industry

Manhattan prosecutors said Rinsch "orchestrated a scheme to steal millions" and signaled they would keep pursuing fraud in the entertainment business. The series at the center of the case remains unfinished and unaired — an $11 million project with nothing to show but a criminal conviction and a prison term.
