# Dozens of Drones Target Moscow as Ukraine Escalates Its Long-Range Campaign

Moscow's mayor said air defenses shot down dozens of Ukrainian drones approaching the Russian capital — the latest in an intensifying campaign of long-range strikes that Ukraine's president has cast as a deliberate effort to force the Kremlin toward ending the war.

The war Russia has tried to keep far from its capital is, night after night, arriving over Moscow.

## Drones over the capital

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel that Russian air defenses shot down dozens of Ukrainian drones as they approached the city, reporting no casualties within Moscow and dispatching emergency crews to debris sites, [the Kyiv Independent reported](https://kyivindependent.com/moscow-june-26/). The strikes on Moscow were part of a far larger overnight wave: Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces downed hundreds of Ukrainian drones across more than a dozen regions, occupied Crimea and surrounding waters — among the largest such barrages it has reported since the 2022 invasion, [according to the Associated Press](https://abcnews.com/International/wireStory/russia-reports-biggest-ukrainian-drone-attacks-soil-annexed-134232258). Russia gave little detail on what was hit, and battlefield claims from both sides cannot be independently verified. Regional officials outside the capital reported scattered damage, including a wounded woman and a struck power line in the Tula region.

## Zelenskyy's stated strategy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been unusually explicit about the purpose of the escalation, describing an extended campaign meant to pressure Russia to end the war after months of stalled diplomacy, [the Washington Times reported](https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2026/jun/26/ukraine-unleashes-one-heaviest-drone-attacks-russia/). "It's time the war ended," he said around an earlier strike on a Moscow-area oil refinery. Ukraine has increasingly turned to long-range drones to reach Russian energy and military infrastructure far behind the front, a form of strategic pressure rather than territorial gain. Kyiv did not always immediately claim individual salvos.

## A month of mounting pressure

The strikes are the latest in a wave that has intensified through June. Ukrainian drones have repeatedly targeted the Moscow Oil Refinery, touching off fires and, on at least one night, prompting temporary flight restrictions and hundreds of delays across Moscow's international airports. On one night this month Sobyanin reported nearly 200 drones intercepted approaching the capital — among the highest single-night counts of the war. The cumulative effect has been to bring the war's disruptions, if not yet its full destruction, to a city long insulated from the front.

## Russia strikes back

Moscow has not confined itself to defense. Ukraine's air force said Russia launched scores of drones and several ballistic missiles at Ukrainian territory in the same window, with most drones intercepted but some missiles getting through; strikes on the Kharkiv region killed at least two civilians and wounded others, Ukrainian authorities said. The exchanges underscore how, with negotiations deadlocked, both sides are leaning harder on long-range strikes.

## Diplomacy at a standstill

The intensifying air war unfolds against frozen talks. Earlier rounds of U.S.-mediated negotiations produced no ceasefire; Russia has demanded Ukrainian recognition of its control over the Donbas, which Kyiv rejects, while Ukraine insists on binding Western security guarantees that Moscow resists. Whether mounting drone pressure shifts the Kremlin's calculations, or simply deepens the stalemate, remains unresolved.
