# Four Die in Mexico City as World Cup Celebrations Turn Deadly

Four people died in Mexico City during the crush of celebrations after Mexico advanced at the World Cup, authorities said, as an estimated 1.4 million revelers packed the capital's main avenue and the city opened an investigation into how a night of triumph turned fatal.

A jubilant night in the Mexican capital ended in tragedy, as four people died amid enormous crowds celebrating the national team's advance at the World Cup.

## What happened

The deaths occurred overnight from June 30 into July 1, after Mexico defeated Ecuador to move into the next round of the 2026 World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada. An estimated 1.4 million people poured into central Mexico City, many converging on the Ángel de la Independencia monument along Paseo de la Reforma, a traditional gathering point for national celebrations, [ABC7 reported](https://abc7.com/post/4-people-die-mexico-city-during-celebrations-world-cup-win-over-ecuador/19430550/).

Mexico City's health secretary, Nadine Gasman, said three people — a 44-year-old man, a 48-year-old woman and a 19-year-old woman — were found unconscious in the streets near the monument and died of asphyxiation, [according to NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/sports/soccer/mexico-city-world-cup-celebration-3-die-asphyxiation-massive-crowd-rcna352579). A fourth person, a man believed to be about 30, was taken to a hospital and died of cardiorespiratory arrest after what authorities described as a medical episode, [the Mexican outlet AM reported](https://www.am.com.mx/nacional/2026/07/01/muerte-de-4-aficionados-durante-festejos-de-mexico-en-mundial-1813816.html). Authorities did not release the victims' names.

## The city's response

Mayor Clara Brugada said emergency crews responded as reports of unconscious people came in, administering more than 700 medical treatments over the course of the night and taking more than two dozen people to hospitals. She said officials had ruled out alcohol as a factor in the asphyxiation deaths, while cautioning that the inquiry was continuing. The Mexico City Attorney General's Office opened an investigation to reconstruct what happened.

Ahead of Mexico's next match, Brugada urged residents to celebrate "responsibly, carefully and with empathy." City officials said they had encouraged fans toward an alternative gathering site to ease congestion downtown, though most still massed on Reforma.

President Claudia Sheinbaum offered condolences and said the government would support the victims' families. Officials said they were reviewing crowd-safety plans for the remaining matches.

## A tournament's shadow

The tragedy underscored the strain that mass gatherings can place on a city, even in moments of collective joy. Mexico's run in a home World Cup has drawn some of the largest crowds the capital has seen in years, and the deaths have renewed longstanding questions about how to manage the enormous throngs that fill public spaces after major sporting results. For now, the investigation continues, and the celebrations that lie ahead will be watched more warily.
