# Iran War, Day 120: Tehran Says Fresh US Strikes Breach a Days-Old Accord

Iran accused Washington of violating a recently signed accord after fresh US strikes on its coastal radar and missile sites, as the conflict between Iran and a US-led coalition reached its 120th day with the Strait of Hormuz still its central, unresolved flashpoint.

The war between Iran and a United States-led coalition entered its 120th day on Friday with a fresh exchange of strikes and accusations, after Washington hit Iranian coastal and missile sites and Tehran said the attacks broke an accord the two sides had signed only days earlier.

## New US strikes

US Central Command carried out strikes targeting what it described as Iranian missile and drone storage facilities and coastal radar and surveillance sites, [Al Jazeera reported](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/6/27/iran-war-day-120-tehran-condemns-us-strikes-says-its-violation-of-mou). US officials said the strikes were a response to an Iranian drone attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz the previous day.

Iranian state media reported that sites near the port of Sirik and on Qeshm Island were struck, while Iran's ports authority said Sirik itself suffered no damage. Neither side reported casualties from the strikes.

## Tehran invokes the accord

Iran framed the strikes as not only an act of aggression but a legal breach. Iran's Foreign Ministry said "the US attacks targeting coastal surveillance facilities violate Article 1 of the Memorandum of Understanding," referring to an agreement reached days earlier between Washington and Tehran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps went further, asserting that the memorandum grants Iran authority over vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz — a claim the United States and the broader maritime community reject.

The full text of the memorandum has not been made public, and the Herald could not independently verify Tehran's characterization of its terms.

## Washington's response

US officials rejected Iran's framing. President Trump described the earlier drone strike on the cargo ship as a "foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement," casting the US strikes as a response to Iranian aggression. Vice President JD Vance warned that "violence will be met with violence." Neither directly addressed Tehran's specific claim about the memorandum in the statements reported.

## The Strait, still the flashpoint

At the center of the conflict remains the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow channel through which a large share of the world's seaborne oil passes. Iran has long asserted an expansive view of its authority over the waterway; Washington and international maritime law do not recognize it. The United Nations has urged a "sustained" reopening of the strait to commercial traffic, but no durable mechanism for managing transit has emerged, and the two governments maintain no direct channel to coordinate it.

Now four months old, the war has produced no decisive outcome and, with each side accusing the other of breaking the latest accord, little obvious room for de-escalation. The question of who controls the Strait of Hormuz — and on what terms ships may pass — remains as unsettled as it was when the fighting began.
