# Jordan Walker wants his Home Run Derby win to bring more Black kids to baseball

St. Louis Cardinals slugger Jordan Walker upset the hometown favorite to win the 2026 Home Run Derby, then turned the spotlight to a cause: getting more Black kids to see baseball as a game for them, in a sport where their numbers have fallen for decades.

Jordan Walker had a message ready when the confetti settled. Hours after the St. Louis Cardinals outfielder [won the 2026 Home Run Derby, beating Philadelphia's Kyle Schwarber on the Phillies' home turf with six straight home runs in the final round](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49358712/jordan-walker-hopes-home-run-derby-win-inspires-black-kids), he used the moment to talk about who he hopes was watching.

## 'I want more Black kids in baseball'

["I want to be a role model for the Black kids, you know, and I want more Black kids in baseball,"](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49358712/jordan-walker-hopes-home-run-derby-win-inspires-black-kids) Walker said. He acknowledged the pull of other sports, saying he knew many young athletes take "the basketball, football route," but wanted them "to know the baseball route is open to them, too." There are plenty, he added, who are "athletic enough and mentally strong enough" to play the game, and he wants to see them do it.

The venue gave the win an underdog edge. Walker had come into the final trailing, in a ballpark packed with fans pulling for Schwarber, before his closing surge flipped the result.

## A long decline

Walker's appeal lands against a decades-long slide. When Major League Baseball's annual diversity report began tracking the figure in 1991, [about 18% of players were Black](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49358712/jordan-walker-hopes-home-run-derby-win-inspires-black-kids). By the mid-2020s that share had fallen to around 6%, a drop often blamed on the cost of youth travel baseball, the scarcity of fields and programs in some communities, and the greater visibility of stars in basketball and football.

There are recent signs of a modest turn. The Black share of players [rose to 6.8% on 2026 opening-day rosters, up from 6.2% in 2025 and about 6% in 2024](https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-diversity-shows-increase-in-black-players-on-opening-day-2026/), the first back-to-back increase in about two decades. League officials credit development pipelines, and note that a number of current Black players came up through MLB-run programs aimed at inner cities and underserved areas.

## Why a Derby matters

A home run contest is not a policy, and Walker was careful not to oversell it. ["Hopefully this raises some awareness,"](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49358712/jordan-walker-hopes-home-run-derby-win-inspires-black-kids) he said. But visibility is exactly what advocates say the sport has lacked for young Black fans: a face near their own age, winning one of baseball's flashiest events on a national stage. Walker, still early in his career, seems intent on being that face, and on turning a night of long balls into an invitation.
