# Justin Gaethje Finally Wins the Undisputed Title, Upsetting Topuria at the White House

After two failed shots at undisputed gold, Justin Gaethje pulled off one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, stopping the previously unbeaten Ilia Topuria to win the lightweight championship in the main event of a UFC card staged on the White House South Lawn.

For years, the undisputed lightweight title was the one prize that eluded Justin Gaethje. On the South Lawn of the White House, he finally claimed it.

## The upset

Gaethje, a heavy underdog, stopped the previously unbeaten champion Ilia Topuria in the main event of UFC Freedom 250, [Al Jazeera reported](https://www.aljazeera.com/sports/2026/6/15/gaethje-shocks-topuria-to-win-ufc-lightweight-title-at-white-house-event). After Topuria took the early rounds, Gaethje turned the fight with a heavy right hand and a sustained assault that left the champion badly marked; Topuria's corner stopped the bout after the fourth round rather than send him out for the fifth, [ESPN reported](https://www.espn.com/mma/story/_/id/49068660/gaethje-bucks-odds-topples-topuria-ufc-lightweight-title). Bookmakers had made Gaethje a wide underdog against a fighter who had beaten a string of the division's best.

## A long road to the top

The victory closed a circle for Gaethje, whose earlier bids for undisputed gold ended in submission losses to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira. In between, he built a reputation as one of the sport's most thrilling fighters and held the "BMF" title, but the championship that counts most had stayed out of reach. This time, cast again as the man not expected to win, he did.

"This sport was made for me," Gaethje said afterward, per ESPN, framing the win as vindication of a career built on absorbing punishment and pressing forward.

## The White House stage

The bout was notable for its venue as much as its result: a UFC card held on the grounds of the White House, an unusual fusion of mixed martial arts and presidential spectacle promoted by the league. Gaethje said he does not see retirement as imminent, [CBS Sports reported](https://www.cbssports.com/ufc/news/justin-gaethje-retirement-ufc-freedom-250-iiia-topuria/), and ruled out an immediate rematch. Attention now turns to who lines up next for a shot at the new champion — with names like Charles Oliveira, the man who once submitted him, among those floated.

For Gaethje, though, the ledger finally reads the way he long wanted it to: undisputed champion, on the biggest and strangest stage his sport has offered.
