# LeBron James Is Leaving. The Lakers Are Rebuilding Fast Around Luka Doncic

LeBron James has told the Lakers he intends to play elsewhere next season, ending an eight-year run that included the 2020 championship. Within hours, Los Angeles pivoted hard toward its new franchise cornerstone, Luka Dončić — trading for a starting center and spending big in free agency to reshape the roster around him.

An era in Los Angeles is ending. LeBron James informed the Lakers this week that he plans to play elsewhere next season, closing out eight years that delivered the franchise its 2020 title, [multiple outlets reported](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/49237403/lakers-trading-jazz-center-walker-kessler-sources-say). And rather than pause to mark the moment, the Lakers moved immediately to build their next team — around Luka Dončić.

## A rapid remake

Once James's decision was known, the front office acted fast. The Lakers acquired center Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade, agreeing to a four-year deal reported at about $130 million and sending Utah two unprotected first-round picks (2031 and 2033) plus pick swaps in 2028 and 2030, [ESPN reported](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/49237403/lakers-trading-jazz-center-walker-kessler-sources-say). In free agency, they added forward Sandro Mamukelashvili (four years, about $52 million), guard Quentin Grimes (four years, about $60 million) and guard Collin Sexton (two years, about $19 million), [Yahoo Sports reported](https://sports.yahoo.com/nba/article/lakers-reportedly-acquire-walker-kessler-from-jazz-in-130-million-sign-and-trade-reach-deals-with-sandro-mamukelashvili-quentin-grimes-and-collin-sexton-153736509.html) — a combined outlay of roughly $261 million.

## Building around Dončić

Kessler, one of the league's better shot-blockers and rebounders, fills a specific need. Since arriving in the stunning February 2025 trade that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas, Dončić had lacked the kind of lob-catching, rim-protecting center that fits his game. The Lakers are betting that pairing him with Kessler — and surrounding both with shooting in Grimes and Sexton and versatility in Mamukelashvili — gives Dončić, still just 26, a supporting cast built to his strengths, alongside holdover guard Austin Reaves.

## The questions

The cost of moving quickly is real. Trading multiple future first-round picks for Kessler and committing big money to role players leaves the Lakers thinner on depth and flexibility, and analysts were mixed on the haul: Sports Illustrated framed the flurry as an aggressive but uncertain answer to James's exit, [in its assessment](https://www.si.com/nba/did-lakers-improve-flurry-free-agency-moves-lebron-james-departure). There is also the simple, looming question of whether a team led by Dončić and Reaves, without James, can contend in a deep Western Conference.

## The end of an era

For all the roster math, the headline is the departure. James spent eight seasons in Los Angeles, won a championship in the 2020 bubble, and became as much a fixture of the city as the franchise itself. His exit closes a defining chapter for the Lakers — and hands the team, unmistakably, to Dončić. The rebuild has already begun; whether it works is next season's story.
