# Man Charged With Killing a North Carolina Letter Carrier on Her Route

A North Carolina man has been charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping in the killing of a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier who was shot while delivering mail on a rural route — a death that lands amid years of heightened concern over violence against the nation's mail carriers.

A routine act of American daily life — the delivery of the mail — ended in a killing on a rural North Carolina road last week.

## What authorities say happened

Brandi Byrd Reynolds, 35, a rural letter carrier from Roaring River, N.C., was shot and killed on June 26 while delivering mail in the Hays community of Wilkes County, in the state's western hills, [WRAL reported](https://www.wral.com/news/state/western-nc-usps-worker-killed-july-2026/). Neighbors reported hearing gunfire in the afternoon; she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors have charged William Craig Durham, 56, also of Roaring River, with first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. According to court documents cited by [NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/north-carolina-postal-service-worker-kidnapped-killed-rcna352505), Durham is accused of restraining Reynolds and taking her from her postal vehicle before shooting her. At a June 30 hearing, prosecutors told the court that Durham had confessed, and a relative of Reynolds said he had previously threatened her; those are allegations, and Durham, who was ordered held without bond, is entitled to the presumption of innocence. A judge noted he had a prior record that included a kidnapping conviction.

## Motive unclear

Investigators have not disclosed a motive, and it is not clear what, if any, relationship existed between the two beyond living in the same small community. The Wilkes County Sheriff's Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said the investigation was continuing.

The U.S. Postal Service confirmed Reynolds was killed on duty. "Our heartfelt sympathies go out to her family and co-workers," the Postal Inspection Service said. Reynolds, described by neighbors as dependable and warm, is survived by two young daughters; her husband died in a car crash in December 2025.

## A broader pattern

The killing comes after years of rising concern over violence against mail carriers. Robberies of postal workers climbed sharply over the past decade, reaching 643 in 2023, with the number causing injuries roughly doubling that year, according to Postal Inspection Service figures cited by [the Government Accountability Office](https://www.gao.gov/blog/robberies-and-other-crimes-against-postal-service-workers-are-whats-being-done-about-it). In response, the USPS and its inspection service launched an initiative called Project Safe Delivery in 2023; the agency reported last year that carrier robberies had since fallen and that thousands of arrests had been made.

Most of that violence has involved robberies — often thefts of the "arrow keys" that open collection boxes — rather than targeted killings, which makes the death of a carrier on her own route especially jarring. For now, a small North Carolina community is left to mourn a woman who was, by the accounts of those who knew her, simply doing her job.
