# Mets fire manager Carlos Mendoza after 34-47 start

The New York Mets dismissed manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday after a 34-47 first half left baseball's highest-spending team in last place in the NL East. Andy Green takes over as interim manager for the rest of the season.

The New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday, ending a tenure that swung from an improbable playoff run to a last-place collapse. The team [dismissed Mendoza](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49186750/mets-fire-manager-carlos-mendoza-34-47-start) with a 34-47 record, 13 games under .500 and at the bottom of the National League East.

Andy Green, who had been serving as a senior baseball operations executive with the club, was named interim manager for the remaining games of the season. It was the Mets' first in-season managerial change since 2008.

## A blunt assessment from the front office

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns praised Mendoza while making clear the season had become untenable. "Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis," [Stearns said](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49186750/mets-fire-manager-carlos-mendoza-34-47-start). "Carlos' impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward."

The move followed a six-game losing streak that included a four-game home sweep by the Chicago Cubs. Green, 48, previously managed the San Diego Padres from 2016 through 2019.

## From the NLCS to the bottom of the division

Mendoza's three seasons in Queens told two very different stories. Hired before the 2024 season, he guided a team that had owned one of the worst records in the majors that June to within two games of the World Series, an [improbable run to the National League Championship Series](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49186750/mets-fire-manager-carlos-mendoza-34-47-start) that made him a fan favorite.

The momentum did not last. After a second-half fade in 2025, the Mets opened 2026 poorly and never recovered, leaving Mendoza with an overall record of 206-199. By the All-Star break this year, the club sat well back in the standings, [CBS Sports reported](https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mets-fire-carlos-mendoza-manager-out/).

## A costly roster that underperformed

What made the collapse especially painful was the investment behind it. The Mets entered 2026 carrying one of the largest payrolls in baseball, built around a star-laden lineup. Instead, injuries and underperformance dragged the team down: New York ranked near the bottom of the league in team batting, [according to CBS Sports](https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mets-fire-carlos-mendoza-manager-out/), and the pitching staff struggled badly in June.

Stearns signaled the front office still intends to be active before the trade deadline. For now, Green inherits a clubhouse in need of stabilizing, while the larger question — who manages this expensive roster beyond 2026 — will wait until the offseason.
