# Nobody won Saturday's Powerball and Monday's jackpot is 748 million

Saturday's numbers were 6, 17, 27, 48 and 50, with a Powerball of 5 and a 3x Power Play. No ticket matched all six, so the jackpot rolls to Monday at an estimated $748 million, with a cash value of $325.1 million. A California ticket did match all five white balls.

## Monday's numbers

The estimated jackpot for the Monday, August 3 drawing is $748 million. The cash value is $325.1 million.

That second figure is the one that matters and the one nobody puts on a billboard. A winner who takes the money now, rather than in payments stretched across decades, receives $325.1 million before any federal tax. The $748 million is an annuity total, not a check.

## California tickets did win

Powerball reports Match 5 winners in California, Maryland and Texas, along with a Match 5 with Power Play winner in Virginia.

Match 5 means all five white balls without the Powerball. Somebody in this state is holding a very good ticket and is not, this morning, a headline.

## Filling in what we could not print earlier

We ran a Powerball piece on Saturday afternoon that deliberately left out the cash value and California's prize rules, because the California Lottery's website would not load for us and we would not publish those details secondhand.

The cash value is now available from Powerball directly, and it is above. The California-specific rules are still worth getting from the lottery rather than from a news story, because prize structures differ by state in ways that change what a winner actually receives.

## The odds have not moved

They never do. The chance of matching all six numbers is 1 in 292.2 million, and the chance of winning any prize at all is 1 in 24.9.

A rolling jackpot changes the size of the prize. It does not change the arithmetic of getting it, and the two are easy to confuse when the number on the sign keeps climbing.
