# Sony to End PlayStation Disc Production in 2028, Confirming All-Digital Future

Sony says it will stop making game discs for new PlayStation titles in January 2028, an official move toward all-digital gaming that has collectors, preservationists and the used-game trade bracing for the end of an era.

Sony is retiring the format that built the PlayStation. In an [official post on the PlayStation Blog](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/physical-disc-production-ending-in-january-2028-for-new-games-releasing-on-playstation-consoles/), the company said that "physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028." After that date, new releases will be sold "on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only."

This is not a rumor or a supply-chain leak. The statement, attributed to Sony Interactive Entertainment communications executive Sid Shuman, is a firm corporate commitment, and it was quickly confirmed across the trade press, from [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/01/sony-to-end-physical-playstation-game-discs-in-2028/) to [GameSpot](https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/).

## What changes, and what doesn't

The cutoff applies only to games that launch on or after January 2028. Sony was explicit that the shift has "no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format." Titles pressed before the deadline stay on shelves, keep working in current consoles, and can still be traded or resold. Discs are not being switched off — Sony is simply going to stop making new ones.

The company also says it will keep selling games through brick-and-mortar retailers after 2028, though it has not spelled out how. As [CNBC noted](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/01/sony-playstation-physical-disc-production-2028.html), it remains unclear whether a boxed game bought in a store will contain a download code, a redemption card, or something else. That ambiguity is one of the biggest open questions of the announcement.

## Following the money to digital

Sony framed the decision as reading the market rather than steering it, citing consumer preference for downloads over discs. The numbers back the argument. According to Sony's own financial figures reported by TechCrunch, digital downloads accounted for roughly 85 percent of full-game software sales on the PS4 and PS5 over the past year, leaving physical copies at about 15 percent — nearly four in five games already bought without a disc.

The move also lands in a wider industry current. Rockstar's hotly anticipated *Grand Theft Auto VI* is set to ship its "physical" edition with only a download code inside the box, a decision that drew sharp criticism from collectors just days before Sony's announcement. For a company whose 1994 debut helped make the optical disc the default medium of console gaming, the pivot is symbolically heavy.

## Consoles and the disc-drive question

Sony's statement is silent on hardware — it does not say whether future consoles will keep an optical drive at all. Independent analysts have filled the gap: Ampere Analysis' Piers Harding-Rolls has suggested a next-generation base model would likely drop the disc drive to trim manufacturing costs, though Sony has confirmed nothing about a PS6. On the current generation, the standard PS5 still ships with a drive and the Digital Edition without one, a split that already nudged buyers toward download-only play.

## Ownership, preservation and the used market

The loudest concerns are about what a gamer actually owns. A digital purchase is, in Sony's own framing, a personal license for non-commercial use rather than outright ownership — content that can be delisted or made inaccessible if servers or storefronts close. That risk is not hypothetical: alongside the disc news, Sony confirmed it will shut the PlayStation Store on the PS3 and PS Vita, with most regions losing access in July 2027, per [Game File](https://www.gamefile.news/p/sony-drops-playstation-discs-2028-ps3-vita-stores-closing). Sony says previously purchased content will remain downloadable "for the foreseeable future," a phrase preservationists find cold comfort.

The used-game trade is the other casualty. Discs can be lent, gifted and resold; account-locked downloads cannot. Eliminating new discs effectively closes the second-hand market for games released after 2028 — a squeeze on budget-minded players and on retailers that have long leaned on trade-ins.

## A bittersweet goodbye

Reaction online has run largely negative, with players objecting to a fully digital future and questioning the timing. For a generation of gamers, the disc was proof of purchase you could hold. Sony has set the clock: after January 2028, that proof will exist only as a line in an account.
