# Three Federal Firefighters Killed in Burnover on the Colorado-Utah Border

Three federal wildland firefighters were killed and two others burned when a wind-driven fire overran their crew in western Colorado — the deadliest single moment yet in a fierce early wildfire season across the West.

Three federal wildland firefighters were killed Saturday when a fast-moving wildfire overtook their crew in Mesa County, in western Colorado, fire officials said — a burnover that also left two firefighters hospitalized with burns.

## A crew overrun

The firefighters were working in hot, dry, gusty conditions when flames swept over them in what officials described as a burnover — when a fire moves faster than crews can reach a safety zone, leaving no viable escape. The firefighters deployed emergency fire shelters, a last-resort heat-reflecting cover, [Al Jazeera reported](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/6/28/three-firefighters-killed-in-us-wildfires-along-colorado-utah). Three did not survive; two others were taken to a hospital.

Agencies withheld the firefighters' names pending notification of their families. "Their bravery, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten," federal fire officials said in a statement reported by [NPR](https://www.npr.org/2026/06/28/g-s1-130737/wildfires-utah-colorado-firefighter-deaths-snyder).

## The Snyder Fire

The deaths came on the Snyder Fire, which ignited Saturday and grew explosively in high winds. The blaze began in eastern Utah before crossing into Mesa County, Colorado, where it merged with smaller fires into a single incident, [The Colorado Sun reported](https://coloradosun.com/2026/06/28/three-federal-firefighters-killed-in-mesa-county-colorado/). By the weekend it had burned an estimated 28,000 acres with no containment, prompting evacuation warnings for rural communities near Grand Junction.

Forecasters had warned of dangerous fire weather: high temperatures, low humidity and strong, shifting winds — the conditions that make a fire's behavior hardest to predict and burnovers most likely.

## A state of emergency

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency in response to the fire and mourned the crew. "I'm devastated about the loss of three heroic firefighters who died in the line of duty in Western Colorado," he said, pledging state resources for the response. Across the state line, southern Utah was battling its own major blaze, with evacuation orders in several small towns and a state of emergency declared by Gov. Spencer Cox.

## A grim season

The losses add a heavy human toll to a wildfire season already running ahead of normal. Federal figures cited by Al Jazeera show roughly three million acres burned nationally so far in 2026, above the 10-year average with half the year still to come, and numerous large fires burning uncontained across the West. Utah and other states have restricted fireworks ahead of the July Fourth holiday as crews brace for more dangerous conditions.

The circumstances of the burnover — including the crew's escape routes and how quickly the fire turned — remain under investigation. Officials said no timeline had been set for findings.
