# What the research actually says about the drug-resistant yeast in American hospitals

Headlines this week describe a deadly superbug confirmed in 23 states. The organism is Candida auris, and it is a yeast, not a bacterium. We could not verify the 23-state figure against any source we can reach, so we are not printing it. What we could verify is the peer-reviewed research, and it is more useful than the headline: 84,941 cases across 82 countries as of December 2025, and a US genomic study showing sustained transmission between regions.

A story circulating this week says a deadly superbug has been confirmed in 23 states. We tried to check it and could not. The outlets carrying the claim are ones we cannot reach, and the federal agency whose surveillance would settle it is also unreachable from here.

So we are not printing the 23-state figure. What follows is what we could verify, which is the underlying research, and it answers the question a reader actually has: how worried should I be?

## First, what it is

Candida auris is a yeast. It is a fungus, not a bacterium, which is why the antibiotics people think of when they hear "superbug" have nothing to do with it.

It has recently been reclassified into the genus Candidozyma, so current literature calls it Candidozyma auris. Both names refer to the same organism.

## The global picture

A review published in [Clinical Microbiology Reviews](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42017651/) in June reports that as of December 2025, "84,941 colonization or infection cases have been reported across 82 countries spanning 6 continents."

Note the phrasing. That figure combines colonization with infection, and those are different things. A colonized person carries the organism on their skin without being sick from it. An infected person is sick. Counting them together inflates any impression of how many people the yeast has actually made ill, which is a reason to read the number carefully rather than a reason to dismiss it, because colonized patients are how it moves through a hospital.

The review describes the organism as multidrug resistant, highly transmissible and environmentally persistent, and notes that cases accelerated after the COVID-19 pandemic.

## The American picture

A study in [Emerging Infectious Diseases](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42044884/) in May, by Lindsay A. Parnell and colleagues including researchers at the federal level, sequenced 1,535 US samples collected from 2013 through 2022.

Its conclusion is the part worth quoting: the data indicate "ongoing transmission and clonal expansion of C. auris, likely propagated by multiple introductions within and between geographic regions."

In plain terms, it is not arriving from abroad over and over. It is being introduced and then spreading between American healthcare facilities and between regions.

The study found four of the six known clades in the US, I, II, III and IV, and did not detect clades V or VI. Of 809 isolates tested for antifungal susceptibility, 53 were resistant to echinocandins, the class of drug usually used first. Of those 53, 92 percent carried mutations in a region called the FKS1 hotspot, and which mutations appeared varied by region.

## Who is actually at risk

This is where the "deadly superbug" framing does the most damage, so we will be direct.

Candida auris is a healthcare problem. It affects people who are already seriously ill: patients in intensive care, people with central venous lines, urinary catheters or breathing tubes, people on long hospital or nursing home stays, people whose immune systems are compromised.

A healthy person going to work, taking their kids to school and going to a restaurant is not the population this organism threatens. Nothing in the research we verified suggests otherwise.

That does not make it unimportant. It makes it a problem for infection control in hospitals and long-term care facilities, which is where public attention would be most useful and is precisely where a general-alarm headline does not direct it.

## Why it is hard to deal with

Three reasons, all in the literature above.

It resists multiple antifungal drugs, and the resistance is genetic and regionally varied, which means treatment failure is a real risk rather than a theoretical one.

It persists on surfaces and equipment, so ordinary cleaning may not clear a room.

And it spreads between people who are not visibly sick with it, which is what colonization means and why it moves quietly through a facility before anyone knows to look.

## On mortality

You will see fatality percentages attached to this organism. We are not printing one.

The figures that circulate are drawn from populations of critically ill patients, many of whom would have been at high risk of dying regardless. Attributing those deaths to the yeast alone overstates what the data support, and neither source we verified gave a mortality rate we could quote responsibly.

## What we would still like to know

Whether California is among the affected states, and what LA County's own case counts look like. We could not reach the state or county health department data that would answer it.

If we get those figures from a source we can stand behind, we will publish them.
