In Artesia, a bloodless Portuguese bullfight fought with Velcro

  • Saturday night, in a 1,000-seat arena built by Portuguese immigrants in 1976, Artesia hosts a bullfight in which no bull is harmed.
  • The darts and the pad the bull wears are tipped with Velcro.
  • It is the centerpiece of the Festa do Espírito Santo, a Holy Spirit festival kept alive by the community that once made Artesia dairy country.
