For a certain generation, "Camp Rock" was a formative summer at the movies — the 2008 Disney Channel hit that turned a trio of singing brothers into pop royalty. Now Disney is sending everyone back to camp.

The comeback

"Camp Rock 3" will premiere on Disney Channel on August 13, with a streaming release on Disney+ the next day, Disney announced. Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas return as the fictional band Connect 3 — reprising their characters Jason, Nate and Shane Gray — alongside Maria Canals-Barrera, who is also back from the original films, ABC7 reported.

Notably, Demi Lovato — who starred as aspiring singer Mitchie Torres in the first two movies — is not returning in front of the camera but is an executive producer on the new film, Deadline reported, which is directed by Veronica Rodriguez.

The setup

According to the first-look teaser, the plot flips the original premise: this time the stars are the mentors. Connect 3 returns to Camp Rock to hold a competition for a fresh act to open their upcoming reunion tour after their scheduled opener falls through. That framing hands the spotlight to a new group of young performers.

Disney has announced an ensemble of newcomers — including Liamani Segura, Malachi Barton, Lumi Pollack, Sherry Cola, Hudson Stone, Casey Trotter, Brooklynn Pitts and Ava Jean — who feature on the film's first single, "One Beat Away," already released ahead of the premiere.

Why it lands now

The original "Camp Rock" and its 2010 sequel, "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam," arrived at the height of the Disney Channel's cultural reach, and they were central to the Jonas Brothers' rise before the group's later breakup and 2019 reunion. A third installment lands squarely in the current wave of nostalgia-driven revivals, betting that the fans who were kids in 2008 — and their kids — will tune in.

Whether "Camp Rock 3" recaptures the originals' spark will be clear in August. For now, the teaser and a new song are enough to have a very online fan base buzzing about a return to the camp where it all started.
