Well before first pitch on Thursday, the line outside Dodger Stadium was not just the usual mix of jerseys and caps. Straw hats were in the crowd too.
The giveaway
For its game against the San Diego Padres, the Dodgers handed out an exclusive "One Piece" collectible to ticketed fans — a crossover item pairing the team with Monkey D. Luffy, the straw-hat-wearing hero of the wildly popular Japanese series, ABC7 reported. Like most stadium promotions, it was limited and first-come, first-served, which is why fans lined up early to be sure of walking away with one.
Why "One Piece," and why the Dodgers
The pairing is not as random as it looks. "One Piece," Eiichiro Oda's long-running manga and anime about a crew of seafaring adventurers, is one of the best-selling comic series in history, with an animated run stretching past a thousand episodes and a devoted global following. Los Angeles, with one of the largest Asian American communities in the country and a deep anime fan culture, is fertile ground for exactly this kind of tie-in.
The Dodgers, for their part, have leaned into themed and cultural nights for years — from heritage celebrations to pop-culture collaborations — as a way to fill seats and reach fans who might not otherwise turn up for a midweek game. That this is the second straight season the team has partnered with "One Piece" suggests the first go-round worked.
The collector's angle
As with any limited stadium giveaway, the item was barely in fans' hands before listings began appearing on resale sites — a familiar afterlife for bobbleheads, jerseys and, now, anime crossovers. For some, the appeal is the keepsake; for others, the flip. Either way, the scene captured something true about modern sports marketing: the game on the field is only part of the draw. On Thursday, a fair number of people came to Chavez Ravine as much for a straw-hatted pirate as for the box score.
