A man was arrested Saturday after allegedly shooting two people with a BB gun during a nude cycling event in downtown Los Angeles, police said. Both victims suffered minor injuries.
What police say happened
The shooting occurred around 11 a.m. near Temple and Alameda streets, as a group of cyclists rode through the area, ABC7 reported. Two men were struck and treated at the scene for lacerations; neither appeared to require hospitalization. Authorities were clear that the weapon was a BB gun, not a conventional firearm — a distinction that shapes both the injuries and the charges, though BB guns can still cause real harm at close range.
The suspect, described by police as a man dressed in black who was riding a scooter, was located and taken into custody, according to MyNewsLA, which cited LAPD. ABC7 reported he was expected to face a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, with additional charges possible. Police had not released his name.
The event
The shooting unfolded during a gathering tied to the World Naked Bike Ride, an annual international event in which participants cycle nude or partly clothed to call attention to cyclist safety and to protest car dependence. Video from the scene showed dozens of riders moving through downtown streets.
What's next
Investigators had not said whether the cyclists were specifically targeted, and no motive was released. LAPD said the investigation remained open as of Saturday afternoon.
