At 67, a Palos Verdes runner chases a 19th straight Badwater 135 finish as the clock tightens

  • Danny Westergaard, a 67-year-old retired aerospace engineer from Palos Verdes Estates, has finished the Badwater 135, a 135-mile race across Death Valley in temperatures above 115 degrees, 18 years running, the sport's longest such streak.
  • This year he is chasing a 19th, and the race just made it harder: the cutoff dropped from 48 hours to 45, and his last finish took 45 hours and 29 minutes.
