A routine afternoon outside a Boyle Heights restaurant turned frightening on Tuesday when an SUV careened onto the sidewalk and into people eating outdoors.
What happened
The crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. near Lorena Street and Cesar Chavez Avenue, outside the Los 5 Puntos restaurant, when a white SUV suddenly veered onto the sidewalk where diners were seated, ABC7 reported, citing surveillance video from the scene.
The injured
At least two people, a man and a woman, were taken to the hospital, ABC7 reported. A witness described a woman suffering serious leg injuries, her daughter shaken but not badly hurt, and a passerby struck when a trash can was pushed into him. Their conditions were not immediately known.
The investigation
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene, and the cause of the crash remained under investigation, ABC7 reported. A driver was later taken into custody, according to accounts from neighbors; authorities had not released details about any charges. Residents said the intersection has been the site of accidents before.
This is a developing local story, and the number of people hurt and the circumstances of the crash could change as police provide more information.
