A night of soccer celebration across the Bay Area gave way to gunfire, stabbings and dispersal orders.
A shooting in San Francisco
Around 9 p.m. Tuesday, San Francisco police responded to a shooting near Spark Social SF, an outdoor food-truck park in Mission Bay that was hosting a public watch party, KTVU reported. Two people were found with gunshot wounds and taken to a hospital with injuries police described as non-life-threatening. Police said a verbal altercation preceded the shooting and that the suspect fled; no arrests had been announced. By Wednesday, Spark Social said it was canceling its remaining World Cup watch parties, citing "the safety and well-being of our community." A nearby watch party at Thrive City reported no violence.
Chaos in San Jose
About 45 miles south, San Jose police said roughly 30,000 fans had gathered around San Pedro Square, the city's designated fan zone, following Mexico's win over Ecuador, NBC Bay Area reported. Two people were stabbed in separate incidents and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police declared an unlawful assembly near midnight after some in the crowd set off fireworks in packed streets, climbed on an ambulance and threw bottles at officers. Several people were arrested; police said "the overwhelming majority of attendees celebrated responsibly." Anyone arrested is presumed innocent unless convicted.
Two days earlier
The violence followed a separate fatal shooting on Sunday a block from the same San Jose fan zone, in which one man was killed and another wounded. Police said that shooting was "unrelated to any World Cup activities or watch party" and that it remained under investigation. The Herald is not naming the victims.
A World Cup host region
The Bay Area is among the North American venues for the 2026 World Cup, with Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara hosting matches through the tournament. Officials in San Francisco and San Jose said they would keep an elevated police presence at fan zones and public screenings for the rest of the tournament, which runs into mid-July.
