Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, faces a hit-and-run charge after a crash in the Napa Valley town of Yountville, authorities said. He has not been arrested, and the case is now with prosecutors.

What authorities describe

The crash happened on Friday at about 2:30 p.m. on the 6700 block of Yount Street in Yountville, ABC7 News reported. According to Napa County sheriff's deputies, Pelosi's convertible struck an unoccupied parked car, causing major damage, and a witness reported seeing the vehicle continue north on Yount Street afterward.

Deputies said Pelosi acknowledged hitting something but told them he did not know what he had hit, so, in their account, "he kept driving." The California Highway Patrol stopped his car a short distance away at Yountville Cross Road, where it showed significant front-right damage, according to ABC7.

Charge and next steps

Deputies said Pelosi faces a hit-and-run charge, and the matter has been referred to the Napa County District Attorney's Office for review and possible prosecution. He was not taken into custody at the scene. A hit-and-run charge is an allegation, and Pelosi is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless a case is filed and proven.

Investigators said a preliminary alcohol screening returned a reading of 0.00, indicating no alcohol was detected. No injuries were reported.

Context

Pelosi, a longtime San Francisco businessman, has drawn attention before in connection with a vehicle. In 2022, he was arrested and later convicted in a driving-under-the-influence case after a nighttime crash in Napa County. There is no indication that alcohol was involved this time, and the preliminary test found none.

As of the initial reports, neither Pelosi's office nor an attorney for him had issued a public statement about the latest incident. Prosecutors will decide whether to file formal charges.
